Performance & Planning

EASA PPL subject 032 — mass/balance & aircraft performance

Performance & Planning (032) is a calculation-intensive subject. You calculate the mass and centre of gravity of your aircraft, take-off distance at altitude and in high temperatures, and fuel required for a flight. Mistakes here have fatal consequences in practice.

Topics covered

  • Mass and balance: CG calculation and envelope
  • Loading: maximum take-off weight, payload, fuel
  • Take-off performance: effect of altitude, temperature and wind
  • Landing performance and minimum landing distance
  • Fuel calculation: consumption, reserve, alternate
  • Density altitude and performance degradation
  • Reading performance charts (chartwork)

Study tips for Performance & Planning

1

Practise CG calculations with sample aircraft until they become automatic.

2

Density altitude is an exam classic: know the formula and its effect.

3

Chart work requires patience: practise with real POH charts.

4

Combine this subject with Navigation in your study plan: they overlap in flight planning.
